India Launches National Turmeric Board To Boost Growth and Exports by 2030

Turmeric, often referred to as the “Golden Spice of India,” holds great significance in the country’s culinary landscape. From ancient times to the present day, turmeric has been a fundamental element in Indian cuisine, contributing not only to the vibrant flavours and distinct aromas but also to its rich cultural and traditional tapestry. Beyond its culinary use, turmeric also boasts a remarkable history deeply rooted in Ayurveda, India’s traditional medicine system, where it is revered for its potential health benefits. 

Now, the government has officially formed the National Turmeric Board to promote the growth and development of turmeric and its products within the country.

After a Cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Anurag Thakur informed reporters that India currently exports turmeric amounting to Rs 1,600 crore, reported news agency ANI.

“If we talk about turmeric. We export turmeric worth Rs 1,600 crore today and now we are aiming to reach Rs 8,400 crore. To accomplish this target it is necessary to form a National Turmeric Board,” he said.

BJP state president and Union minister G. Kishan Reddy added, “Turmeric is majorly cultivated in Tamil Nadu, Telangana state, Karnataka, MP, Odisha, Bengal and Gujarat. The board will help in setting up processing units and aid in its export. Establishing a tribal university was delayed owing to delay in finalising the land for setting up the board.”

India aims to reach $1B in turmeric exports by 2030 

India is the top producer, consumer, and exporter of turmeric, holding a substantial 62% share of the global market. With the focused efforts of the National Turmeric Board, India is aiming to reach a remarkable milestone of $1 billion (Rs 7000 crore) in turmeric exports by 2030.

The newly established National Turmeric Board is set to drive initiatives related to turmeric, focusing on its growth and development. It will coordinate with various government agencies and the Spices Board, capitalising on the increasing global interest in turmeric’s health benefits. The board aims to boost awareness and consumption worldwide, explore new international markets, promote research for innovative products, and empower turmeric growers through skill development. By ensuring quality, safety, and value addition, the board intends to enhance the well-being of growers and maintain India’s position as a top exporter of high-quality turmeric and its products.
